Common biases in client involved decision-making in the AEC industry

Sujesh F. SUJAN, Arto KIVINIEMI, Steve W. JONES, Jacqueline M. WHEATHCROFT, Eilif HJELSETH

Frontiers of Engineering Management 2019, Volume 6, Issue 2,   Pages 221-238 doi: 10.1007/s42524-019-0026-3

Abstract: Understanding of the constitution of client involved decisions is important for future improvements of the processes. Significant decisions in construction projects are reliant on heuristic processes where assumptions are developed from past experience. The paper presents a methodology to collect empirical data in an unstructured manner utilizing participant intuition and experience regarding project level collaboration, a term easily understood by practitioners. Empirical data collected from 6 focus group discussions in Norway and 18 individual interviews in Finland is associated with biases in decision making aimed at bridging the gap of understanding and literature’s insufficient coverage. An analytic framework was developed to suit the diverse emergence of concepts to allow application of psychological principles in a structured manner to empirical data. The paper contributes by identifying types of cognitive and motivational biases in client involved decisions. The biases are found to be alleviated by one another depending on the particular application of the decision. Findings suggest that normative beliefs exist developed from past experience and habitual thinking. A number of emerged biases in this domain are alleviated from normative beliefs which are discussed in this paper.

Methodological considerations for redesigning sustainable cropping systems: the value of data-mining large and detailed farm data sets at the cropping system level

Nicolas MUNIER-JOLAIN, Martin LECHENET

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2020, Volume 7, Issue 1,   Pages 21-27 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2019292

Abstract:

Redesigning cropping and farming systems to enhance their sustainability is mainly addressed in scientific studies using experimental and modeling approaches. Large data sets collected from real farms allow for the development of innovative methods to produce generic knowledge. Data mining methods allow for the diversity of systems to be considered holistically and can take into account the diversity of production contexts to produce site-specific results. Based on the very few known studies using such methods to analyze the crop management strategies affecting pesticide use and their effect on farm performance, we advocate further investment in the development of large data sets that can support future research programs on farming system design.

Resource scheduling techniques in cloud from a view of coordination: a holistic survey Review

Yuzhao WANG, Junqing YU, Zhibin YU,yuzhao_w@hust.edu.cn,yjqing@hust.edu.cn,zb.yu@siat.ac.cn

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 1,   Pages 1-40 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.2100298

Abstract: Nowadays, the management of resource contention in shared cloud remains a pending problem. The evolution and deployment of new application paradigms (e.g., deep learning training and s) and custom hardware (e.g., graphics processing unit (GPU) and tensor processing unit (TPU)) have posed new challenges in resource management system design. Current solutions tend to trade cluster efficiency for guaranteed application performance, e.g., resource over-allocation, leaving a lot of resources underutilized. Overcoming this dilemma is not easy, because different components across the software stack are involved. Nevertheless, massive efforts have been devoted to seeking effective performance isolation and highly efficient resource scheduling. The goal of this paper is to systematically cover related aspects to deliver the techniques from the perspective, and to identify the corresponding trends they indicate. Briefly, four topics are involved. First, isolation mechanisms deployed at different levels (micro-architecture, system, and virtualization levels) are reviewed, including GPU multitasking methods. Second, within an individual machine and at the cluster level are investigated, respectively. Particularly, GPU scheduling for deep learning applications is described in detail. Third, adaptive resource management including the latest -related research is thoroughly explored. Finally, future research directions are discussed in the light of advanced work. We hope that this review paper will help researchers establish a global view of the landscape of resource management techniques in shared cloud, and see technology trends more clearly.

Systems biomedical analysis of Schistosoma japonicum

Ze-Guang HAN MD,

Frontiers of Medicine 2010, Volume 4, Issue 2,   Pages 157-165 doi: 10.1007/s11684-010-0034-5

Abstract: Human schistosomiasis, caused mainly by three principal species including , , and , remains a major public health concern worldwide. is prevalent in southern China, being a major disease risk for 66 million people. The blood fluke has a complex life cycle for survival: as a free-living form in fresh water and as a parasite in the snail intermediate and vertebrate definitive hosts. Systems-based biomedical analyses, including genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic and metabonomic approaches, have been performed on the schistosome. These comprehensive investigations have not only characterized the genomic features but also chartered gene and protein expression profiles across genders and developmental stages. The integration of the huge information will lay a global and solid foundation for the molecular architecture of the biology, pathogenesis, and host-parasite interactions of the human blood fluke, which will facilitate the development of a new antischistosomal vaccine and drugs as well as diagnostic markers for the treatment and control of schistosomiasis.

Numerical analysis and experimental investigation of modal properties for the gearbox in wind turbine

Pengxing YI,Peng HUANG,Tielin SHI

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2016, Volume 11, Issue 4,   Pages 388-402 doi: 10.1007/s11465-016-0404-z

Abstract:

Wind turbine gearbox (WTG), which functions as an accelerator, ensures the performance and service life of wind turbine systems. This paper examines the distinctive modal properties of WTGs through finite element (FE) and experimental modal analyses. The study is performed in two parts. First, a whole system model is developed to investigate the first 10 modal frequencies and mode shapes of WTG using flexible multi-body modeling techniques. Given the complex structure and operating conditions of WTG, this study applies spring elements to the model and quantifies how the bearings and gear pair interactions affect the dynamic characteristics of WTGs. Second, the FE modal results are validated through experimental modal analyses of a 1.5 WM WTG using the frequency response function method of single point excitation and multi-point response. The natural frequencies from the FE and experimental modal analyses show favorable agreement and reveal that the characteristic frequency of the studied gearbox avoids its eigen-frequency very well.
